The Wide Earth

I used to say to my daughter 'I love you all the wide earth, the stars, and the universe', so when thinking of an idea for a present for 'daughter's day' (I invented it because she said it was unfair that mothers and fathers get a day but children don't), I decided to do 3 paintings on that theme.

Again the photograph doesn't do it justice, but similar to the other paintings, I used a layering technique, pastels, pens and added mediums to the paint that gave sections of it the look as if it was highly varnished .

Form and Meaning

This was a comment I included in my description of the 3 paintings I did for a friend found below (Moon Man, Saturnine, Earth Spiral):

"As a final note to these 3 pieces, when studying the humanities at university, you are told that your work should have 'form and meaning'. These paintings have form, but I did not attribute any meaning to them, though others may do so and already have done. I found that as a composer of modernistic classical and electroacoustic music, applying meaning to your work was seen as anachronistic. With regard to music, I generally chose a theme and a meaning because I couldn't imagine not having some emotional connection with my work. That said, when it came down to the actual compositional process, in the case of the modernistic classical compositions, I chose notes and groups of notes that were in some ways beautiful to me; electroacoustic sounds similarly. In that sense, and at those moments, my theme or the meaning of them meant nothing really, it was only my response to the sounds I was making that mattered. I feel this way about painting too; I only respond to the images I see that inspire the painting, and in turn my response to the various colours that I see as I mix and juxtapose them on the canvas. It feels good to say that these paintings have no real meaning other than the response I feel when I see them, but also because I have realised that ultimately, art can and does belong to everyone, and just like things in the natural world, we all respond differently, and shouldn't be made to feel inferior because our response isn't the same as everyone else."
